Oh me of little faith!
Joy of joys. Further inspection (i.e. yanking great bits of catalloy off the wheelarch and prodding around with a screwdriver) has revealed the bus to be a very solid old chap indeed, merely in need of a bit of bodywork TLC. Phew.
Our man – retired from the rigours of mechanics and spraypainting though he may well be – has offered to take on the job if I’ll do the interior preparation (i.e. taking out the seats and stuff to make it less flammable! Yikes!) so that he can do the body bits and the welding. He’ll even stick on a new exhaust if I want! (Well, it would be 30quid for a bit of welding which might give the exhaust a few months or so, or only 68 for a lovely new silencer. No brainer I reckon.)
Sounds like a plan to me – off now to order some parts and practice with the fire extinguisher.
